Pediatric Oriental Medicine (POM) -
is a complete system of medicine developed, refined, and practiced over
thousands of years in Asia's top clinics and hospitals. POM is based on
the same theories as those practiced by acupuncturists and oriental
medical doctors on adults, but the diagnostic methods and treatment
techniques are modified for the immature physiology, active nature and
increased susceptibility to external influences inherent to
children. For thousands of years POM has advanced with the knowledge
that children are not
simply little adults as their small body's systems are not yet fully
developed. Just as Western medicine has doctors that specialize in
treating children, Chinese medicine also views Pediatrics as a
specialty. Pediatric Oriental Medicine (POM) is the application of the
principles of Chinese medicine to the immature physiology of children
utilizing ancient and modern treatment techniques including; Herbal
Medicine, Chinese Pediatric Massage (Tuina), Chinese Dietary Therapy
and Nutritional Counseling, Acupuncture, Heat Therapy, Cupping,
Breathing and Relaxation Techniques.

Acupuncture is a medical treatment dating back thousands of years. The objective of acupuncture is to encourage the body's natural self-healing ability and re-balance its systems. This is accomplished by inserting hair-thin needles into one or more of the 365 acupuncture points that lie along the body's 22 energy channels, or pathways. The body's energy, Qi (pronounced chee), circulates through these channels to reach every part of the body; when energy is not moving correctly, pain and disease result. Proper needle placement reestablishes balance by resetting and redirecting the flow of energy. Acupuncture points are located where energy is most easily accessed and influenced, allowing for the most efficient and effective correction of unhealthy energy flow.
In children, acupuncture is used sparingly. In young children there is NO needle retention; the needles are inserted and immediately removed. Most children are actually unaware of the fact that they have experienced acupuncture (except that they feel better!).

Herbal Medicine is the most commonly prescribed treatment in Oriental Medicine. Herbs work with natural processes to strengthen bodily systems, such as the digestive and respiratory systems. For thousands of years, Asia's children have safely taken herbal medications. The herbs used at the Bee Well Kidz clinic are of the highest quality and are grown naturally. They are prescribed as teas, pills, or granules and are used to both treat and prevent illness. Because children's systems react easily to stimuli, a small dosage is usually sufficient to achieve desired results.

Chinese Pediatric Massage (CPM) - Also called Pediatric Tuina, CPM is a set of specific massage techniques tailored to the immature physiology of children that are used in addition to or lieu of acupuncture to stimulate and enhance a child’s natural healing abilities, remove restrictions, balance the body and prevent and treat childhood illnesses. This ancient approach to health maintenance and recovery locates and treats specific points and areas of the body particular to children that connect to internal bodily functions. Commonly used throughout Asia, these gentle techniques effectively treat many common childhood illnesses, such as digestive problems, colic, ear aches and infections, fever, coughs, sleep disorders and constipation as well as strengthen overall immunity. At Bee Well Kidz, parents receive instruction on Pediatric Tuina techniques specific to their child's illness or disability.

Chinese Dietary Therapy - The proper use of food is the core of Eastern pediatric care and has been effectively practiced for thousands of years. According to Oriental Medicine, children's inherently weak digestive systems, coupled with improper dietary habits, cause many common pediatric diseases. Chinese Dietary Therapy is a system of dietary recommendations based on the categorization of food according to its effect on bodily systems and thermal regulation. The categories highlight foods that assist and those that inhibit the digestive process. At Bee Well Kidz, parents receive instruction on the elements of Chinese Dietary Therapy specific to their child's treatment.
